i suppose a cavity, as in the vase example, would have as its cause the vase itself. so, by the definition of "conditioned things = caused things", it would then be a conditioned thing. in effect, something you could engage with, and therefore something that would have a relationship with affliction.

makes sense.

maybe the idea is that "space", the possibility for an object to occupy a dimension, is the unconditioned, while "spaces", things that have utility and are available for interaction are conditioned?

but then, which skandha are "spaces" in? in an earlier statement, it says that all conditioned things fall into the schema of the 5 skandhas.

A cavity is defined by its shape. In space there are possible different types of shapes (inner and outer volumes) because space contains them all.
