Russell I don't want to appear unsupportive, but I think you are making unnecessarily heavy weather of this. :shrug

Just go with shri, easy on the s. Close enough.

Russell,

My advice is to focus on following the instructions folks have given you here rather than "hearing" the sound when you say it. Neither hri nor retroflex shri exist in English (or any European language you're likely to speak) as separate phonemes. This means you most likely can't hear the difference between the two sounds consistently and can easily twist yourself into knots second guessing yourself.

The only way to cure yourself of this sort of linguistically conditioned selective deafness in my experience is to learn the sound mechanically (where to place the tongue, how to articulate etc.), practice that for a while, and then have a native speaker slowly and deliberately alternate between minimal pairs.

It's because you do an apico-dental movement which is too stressed (and you don't try to sound ri with an aspirate). Maybe you should try to move your tongue further against the palate, but merely touching it with the tip of the tongue while exhaling the "ri" sound. If you've heard the sound, it is quite easy to imitate it, but if you've never heard it before, there are chances you won't make it right...

Ok thanks, that makes sense, and i think i can make a range of sounds now with the right one in there, but like you and pecha mention, hard to narrow down on the exact sound without feedback in person. Will practise a little and maybe look into these linguistic terms a bit more.
