Well said, except for the Ganges type .

This is also wrong. There are six examples of the nature of mind. Each one must be meditated on along with a practice of guru yoga. Ganga Mahamudra Upadesha explains you only gain realization when the blessings of the teacher enter your heart. Essence Mahamudra is the path of blessings. Apparently only the Drikung and Taklung Kagyu explain it this way. There's no such essence Mahamudra that dispenses with devotion. And devotion in Kagyu means guru yoga in a variety of forms.

BTW, anyone who is really studying essence Mahamudra should study Water Crystal, by HH Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche. He went through great pains to uncover the real textual background for the existence of this tradition in Kagyu, and outlines it very very clearly. He went to all the Kagyu sects and collected all the texts.
